A dirt floor finished with tataki-do (pounded earth). Tataki-do is a type of soil rich in soluble silica that has been weathered from rocks such as granite and andesite, and hardens when mixed with hydrated lime and water. Hon-kitataki refers to a mixture of tataki-do with roughly double the amount of lime, mixed with water and lye, and then spread over the dirt floor to a thickness of about 3 sun (about 9 cm) and pounded to harden. It is also called "shikku tataki." Nowadays, tataki-do has mostly been replaced by cement mortar or concrete. It can also refer to the finishing method of hammering the surface of stone to leave fine marks, the basic process of polishing stone, or the job of a worker hitting a pillar or wall formwork with a mallet from outside when pouring concrete.
