This refers to a process that makes fabric less susceptible to wrinkles, and was formerly known as anti-wrinkle processing. It is primarily used on cellulose woven fabrics and knitwear, such as cotton and rayon. Historically, it was announced in 1926 by the British company Total Broadhurst Lee. It began with a patent for a wrinkle-resistant process that treated cellulose fabrics with urea-formaldehyde resin (precondensate). In Japan, it was initially commercialized with the aim of improving the water resistance of rayon staple fabrics and preventing wrinkles from forming when worn.
