A general term for plants used in poison fishing in the upper reaches of the Amazon River in Peru, Bolivia, and other areas. Poison fishing itself is widely practiced in the tropical lowlands of South America, and the ingredients are diverse. The plants called barbasco are mainly Seriania perulacea of the Sapindaceae family and Tephrosia toxicaria of the legume family. The roots of these plants are pounded, the exposed fibers are thoroughly rubbed in river water to wash away the poison, and the resulting alkaloid poison paralyzes the fish, causing them to be caught, which is called "barbasco fishing."
