A copperplate engraver from the Upper Rhine region. Neither his real name nor his birth and death years are known. He was given this name because he left behind copperplate engravings that served as a substitute for hand-drawn playing cards. He was active between the 1430s and 1450s, and is known as one of the earliest artists to produce prints for the masses. His charming, refined, and precise lines are common to early German prints in general. Among his remains are over 60 copperplate playing cards divided into five sets of designs, and 40 other religious prints, but only one of each remains.
