A copperplate engraver from the Upper Rhine region. Neither his real name nor his birth and death years are known. He was given this name because he left behind copperplate engravings that served as a substitute for hand-drawn playing cards. He was active between the 1430s and 1450s, and is known as one of the earliest artists to produce prints for the masses. His charming, refined, and precise lines are common to early German prints in general. Among his remains are over 60 copperplate playing cards divided into five sets of designs, and 40 other religious prints, but only one of each remains. [Koike Toshiko]

ライン上流地方の銅版画家。本名，生没年とも不詳。手描きトランプの代用としての銅版画を残したのでこの名がある。1430～50年代に活躍し，大衆のための版画を制作した最も初期の画家として知られる。愛らしくも洗練された正確な描線は，初期ドイツ版画全般に共通するものである。遺品のうち銅版画トランプ六十数葉は5組の図柄に分かれ，その他40葉の宗教版画があるが，すべて各1点しか残っていない。【小池寿子】
