Balthasar Hubmaier

Balthasar Hubmaier
Around 1480 - 1528
German Reformer. One of the early and powerful leaders of the Anabaptist movement, he excelled in culture and scholarship. His birth date is said to have been between 1480 and 1485. He became the bishop of Waldshut in 1520 and carried out the Reformation along the lines of his friend Zwingli, but he eventually broke with him and became his enemy. In 1525, he became an Anabaptist and, with the support of the city council, established an Anabaptist state church in Waldshut that included the entire population. He fled to Nikolsburg in Moravia just before the city, which had allied with the peasant army in the German Peasants' War, was occupied by the Austrian army. There, he also established an Anabaptist state church with the support of the monarch.
