A tourist and resort city in northeastern India, in the northern part of West Bengal. It is located at an altitude of 2,248 meters on the southeastern foot of the Nepal Himalayas. It has a population of 107,530 (2001). The name means "town of thunder" in Tibetan. It is a summer resort established by the British, and is famous for producing Darjeeling black tea. On a clear day, it is one of the most scenic spots in India, with views of the Himalayas, including Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586 meters) and Mt. Everest (8,848 meters). The tourist season is spring and autumn, and it rains a lot in summer. The city retains the streetscape from the British colonial era, and is lined with tourist facilities such as hotels, restaurants, and markets, as well as Lloyd's Botanical Gardens, the Natural History Museum, and the Hindu Dil Dam Temple. The market in this town also functions as an international market, with Nepal and Tibet as its hinterlands. Besides black tea, other major products include cardamom (a spice similar to coffee), chinchora (a medicinal herb used to treat wounds), and quinine. Tiger Hill, 11 km south, is famous as an observation deck for the Himalayas. To get there, take a bus or taxi from Bagdogra, a 55-minute flight from Kolkata (Calcutta), or take the train from Kolkata to Siliguri and then take the narrow-gauge mountain railway.
