An industrial city in the mid-west of Karnataka state in southwest India. In 1961, it was merged with the cities of Hubli and Dharwad. Its population is 648,000 (1991). Hubli's history dates back to the 11th century, and in the 16th to 18th centuries it flourished as a key transportation hub and a distribution center for iron and saltpeter. It became a British colony in 1818, and since the 1970s has become a distribution center for cotton and rice in the southern cotton region of the Deccan Plateau. In addition to modern industries such as spinning, metalworking, and railways, it is home to the traditional silk weaving industry. Dharwad is a smaller city than Hubli, but has many higher education institutions, including the University of Karnataka. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
