Hvar (Island) (English spelling)

An island in southern Croatia, off the Adriatic coast. It has an area of 299.7 km2 and a population of about 20,000. The centre of the island is Hvar (population 3,000) on the southwest coast. Although it is mainly made up of limestone, it is blessed with a Mediterranean climate, producing wine, olive oil and lavender perfume, and livestock farming and fishing are thriving. Many ruins from the Greek and Roman eras and medieval Venetian-style buildings remain. It also has a well-developed swimming beach, and is crowded with domestic and foreign tourists seeking sun in any season. [Tanaka Issei]
