Banquet and entertainment

Japanese: 宴饗楽 - えんきょうがく
Banquet and entertainment

[Chinese Gagaku]
Gagaku has its origins in songs and dances linked to ancient rituals, but the concept of gagaku began in the Spring and Autumn period (8th to 5th centuries BC) when Confucius distinguished between Gasheng (elegant music) and Zhengsheng (entertaining, pleasing to the ears, music of the Zheng and Wei states) and respected Gasheng as Confucian ritual music. During the Warring States period (5th to 3rd centuries BC), there were temple ritual music to worship ancestors, suburban ritual music to worship the gods of heaven, earth, mountains, and rivers, and banquet music for ceremonial banquets, and dances for the literary and military were performed. Originally, there were four dancers, but by the end of the Warring States period, the Liukhu dance with 12 dancers appeared.

From "Jubuki"
