A genus of the Rubiaceae family with about 30 species distributed in North and Central America, several of which and hybrids are cultivated in greenhouses or frames for cut flowers. Mitsubakanchouji grows to a height of 50-180cm, with 3-4 leaves in whorls at the bottom and opposite leaves at the top. It produces cymes at the top of the stem, with slender scarlet tubular flowers that end in a cross shape of four. Nagabanakanchouji has large, white, fragrant flowers.
