A prefecture-level city in the western part of Gansu Province, China. It only governs the district of the same name (as of 2016). It has a permanent population of 231,853 (2010). It is a strategic location at the foot of the Jiayū Mountains, and has been a stronghold on the East-West transportation route since ancient times. In 1372 during the Ming Dynasty, following the pacification of Hexi by Feng Sheng (?-1395), Jiayuguan was established here, at the western end of the Great Wall, as a frontline base on the northern border, and troops were stationed there. Even today, the three-story castle tower and double walls remain, and in 1987 UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) registered the area as a World Heritage Site as a component part of the Great Wall (World Cultural Heritage). The city is served by the Lanxin Line, the Jiajing Line (Jiayuguan-Jingtieshan), and the Jiace Line (Jiayuguan-Cheke Port), and is close to Jiayuguan Airport. There are many factories in the metallurgy, chemical, machinery, textile, and food processing industries.
