Muammad ibn Ismā'īl al-Bukhārī

A famous Islamic scholar of hadith (traditions about the words and deeds of the Prophet). With an excellent memory from an early age, he traveled from Khorasan to Egypt, meeting over 1,000 scholars and collecting hadith enthusiastically. He compiled the "Saheeh Collection," the most respected of the six hadith collections that are considered canonical in the Sunni sect. This book was created after 16 years of work, selecting only the most reliable hadith from 600,000 hadiths. It contains 7,397 hadiths arranged by subject along with their isnads (paths of transmission), and contains a total of 2,762 different hadiths, excluding duplicates. He also wrote "History (Ta'arif)," a collection of biographies of hadith transmitters.

イスラムの著名なハディース（預言者の言行に関する伝承）学者。幼少より記憶力に優れ、ホラサーンからエジプトまで各地を巡り1000人を超える学匠に会いハディースを熱心に収集した。スンニー派で正典的取扱いを受けている六つのハディース集のなかでもっとも尊重されている『サヒーフ集』を編纂(へんさん)した。16年の歳月を費やし60万に上るハディースから信頼に足るもののみを選び出して生まれたのが本書であり、7397のハディースがイスナード（伝承経路）とともに主題別に配列されており、重複を除くと合計2762の異なるハディースが含まれている。このほかハディース伝承者の伝記を集めた『歴史(タアリーフ)』の著作などがある。
