...In the Middle Ages, it was also called Takushima, and in the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki it is written as Takoshima, and it is said that it got its name because an octopus that lived in Kizuki Misaki in Izumo County was caught by the Ame no Hahawashi and flew down to land here. It is a low, plateau-like volcanic island made of hard, porous basalt, with Otsukayama (42m) in the center. The basalt, called "shimaishi," was exported as building material and was also used in the construction of Matsue Castle. At Osoe, the eastern end of the island, there is a lava tunnel (Tokuten) and a second lava tunnel (Ten). ...
