A cyclic acid anhydride with a structure in which one molecule of water has been removed from the two carboxyl groups of succinic acid. It is a colorless crystal with a melting point of 120°C and a boiling point of 261°C. It sublimes at around 100°C under reduced pressure. It is soluble in chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, and ethyl alcohol, but is poorly soluble in water and ether. When heated with water, it becomes succinic acid, and when heated with ammonia, it produces succinimide. It is usually obtained by heating succinic acid with acetic anhydride, acetyl chloride, phosphorus oxychloride, etc., but industrially it is produced by catalytic hydrogenation of maleic anhydride.
