A cyclic acid anhydride with a structure in which one molecule of water has been removed from the two carboxyl groups of succinic acid. It is a colorless crystal with a melting point of 120°C and a boiling point of 261°C. It sublimes at around 100°C under reduced pressure. It is soluble in chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, and ethyl alcohol, but is poorly soluble in water and ether. When heated with water, it becomes succinic acid, and when heated with ammonia, it produces succinimide. It is usually obtained by heating succinic acid with acetic anhydride, acetyl chloride, phosphorus oxychloride, etc., but industrially it is produced by catalytic hydrogenation of maleic anhydride. コハク酸の2個のカルボキシル基から1分子の水がとれた構造をもつ環式酸無水物。融点120℃,沸点261℃の無色の結晶。減圧下100℃付近で昇華する。クロロホルム,四塩化炭素,エチルアルコールに可溶,水,エーテルに難溶。水と加熱するとコハク酸になり,アンモニアと加熱するとコハク酸イミドを生じる。ふつうコハク酸を無水酢酸,塩化アセチル,オキシ塩化リンなどと加熱すると得られるが,工業的には無水マレイン酸の接触水素化によって製造される。
