Japanese: 気象観測船 - きしょうかんそくせん（英語表記）weather ship

An observation vessel that conducts meteorological observations at required locations at sea using a set method and reports the results. Seventy percent of the Earth's surface is ocean, so meteorological observations at sea are important for understanding changes in the weather. For this reason, marine meteorological observations are conducted by ordinary merchant ships and fishing boats, as well as by specialized meteorological observation vessels. The Japan Meteorological Agency's Keifu Maru is a typical example, and in addition to ordinary meteorological observation equipment, it is also equipped with high-altitude observation equipment and weather radar, allowing it to observe winds, temperature, rain, and other conditions in the upper atmosphere.

海上の所要の位置で定められた方式によって気象観測を行い，その結果を通報する観測船。地球の表面の7割は海であり，天気の変化を知るためには海上における気象観測がたいせつである。そのため一般の商船や漁船などによっても海上の気象観測が行われているほか，気象観測専門の船を使用して観測を行っている。気象庁の啓風丸はその代表的なもので，一般の気象観測装置に加えて高層観測装置や気象レーダーも設置してあり，上空の風，気温，雨などの観測を行うことができる。
