Tufted puffin

A seabird of the family Aucunidae in the order Charadriiformes. Total length 37 cm. The whole body is blackish brown, and the bill is flat and large for the body. In summer plumage, the face is white, and yellow ornamental feathers appear in a tuft around the eyebrows. The bill is also bright orange-red, and the legs are also red, so in Hokkaido it is also called the Oirancho. It is distributed along the coasts of the Bering Sea and the Sea of ​​Okhotsk, as well as in cold currents in the northern Pacific Ocean from California to Hokkaido. It digs a horizontal hole about one meter long in the grass on the cliffs of remote islands and lays a single egg. It is an excellent diver, able to dive several tens of meters to catch and eat small fish. A small number of them breed on remote islands in eastern Hokkaido. In winter, it is rarely seen not only in Hokkaido but also in the seas of northern Honshu. "Etopirika" means beautiful nose and beautiful beak in Ainu language.

鳥綱チドリ目ウミスズメ科の海鳥。全長37センチメートル。体は全体が黒褐色で、嘴(くちばし)は縦に平たく体のわりに大きい。夏羽では顔が白色で、眉(まゆ)の部分に黄色の飾り羽が房状に現れる。嘴も橙赤(とうせき)色で鮮やかになり、足も赤いため北海道ではオイランチョウともよばれる。ベーリング海およびオホーツク海の沿岸をはじめ、カリフォルニアから北海道までの太平洋北部の寒流域に分布する。離島などの崖(がけ)の上の草地に1メートルほどの横穴を掘り、1卵を産む。潜水が得意で、数十メートルは潜ることができ、小魚をとらえて食べる。北海道東部の離島で少数が繁殖している。冬季には北海道だけでなく、本州北部の海上でもまれにみられる。「エトピリカ」とはアイヌ語で美しい鼻、美しい嘴の意である。
