A type of shipworm (illustration) that bores into underwater timber, such as piers, pilings, aquaculture rafts, timber storage, and wooden ships, and causes damage by living inside them. Shipworms are soft, slender insects that can grow to about 30 cm long, and have a pair of small white shells on the left and right at the front end (deep inside the bored hole), which form a sphere when put together. The rear end (near the entrance of the hole) is narrow and contains a water inlet and outlet pipe, which is surrounded by a pair of calcareous, arrow-like tail plugs on the left and right (illustration).
