Miyakoshi - Miyanokoshi

Japanese:
Miyakoshi - Miyanokoshi
Located on the right bank of the mouth of the Sai River, this port town has existed since the Middle Ages, and corresponds to the current Kanaishimoto-cho in Kanazawa City. In the Middle Ages, it was one of the distribution centers along the Sea of Japan coast, part of Akatsuchi Village in Ono-sho. In 1372, the Muromachi Shogunate ordered the suspension of the official duties of the shugo for merchant ships docking at Ono-sho Port, but the port is considered to be a collective name for both Miyakoshi and Ono Port. Merchants from Miyakoshi appear in the "Oguri" section of the Setsugeishu. In the early modern period, the Kanazawa Domain improved the roads and waterways connecting the castle town with Miyakoshi, appointed a Miyakoshi Town Magistrate, and made the area an outer port for the domain. Since then, large amounts of timber from Oshu, Noto salt, and wood for fuel have been imported, while rice for Osaka was shipped out, and the area prospered as the largest port in the domain. There were many ship wholesalers and inns for Kitamae ships, and the wealthy merchant Zeniya Gobei also based here. In the mid-19th century, there were 1,496 houses and 5,008 people. There was a dispute with the neighboring Ono Port over the import of timber. In 1866, the feudal domain ordered the merger of this area with Ono, and the town became Kanaishi-cho. In 1943, it was merged into Kanazawa City.
