Funaki Pass

Japanese:
Funaki Pass
Lakeside barrier established in Omi Province. The name Funaki Barrier was said to have originated from the fact that there were similar Funaki Barriers in Gamo District (present-day Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture) on the southeast shore of Lake Biwa, and Takashima District (present-day Takashima City) on the west shore, both of which were distribution centers for timber for shipbuilding. In 1382, the annual tax payments from Ono Manor in Kaga Province, which was the property of Rinsenji Temple in Kyoto, were held at Lakeside Funakihama Barrier, which was under the control of Enryakuji Temple, and the shogunate ordered that they be allowed to pass after an investigation. This is thought to be Funaki Barrier in Takashima District, but in some cases it is difficult to distinguish. In 1447, when materials for the construction of the Buddhist temple of Nanzenji Temple in Kyoto were being transported from Hida, the shogunate ordered that they be allowed to pass without hassle through barriers under the control of the Sanmon Gate, such as Hiyoshi Funaki Barrier East and West. In 1455, the shogunate donated Funaki Barrier to Toji Temple in Kyoto as a construction fee office in place of Yodotsu Barrier. In 1485, the position of deputy governor of Funaki Barrier in Takashima County, which was a shogunate estate, was transferred from the Kobayashi clan to the Ise clan.
