...The center of this movement was the Slovak People's Party (renamed Hlinka's Slovak People's Party in 1925) led by Hlinka, which gradually gained power with the support of Catholic clergy, peasants, and some intellectuals. After the Munich Agreement of September 30, 1938 decided the cession of the Sudetenland (Sudety) region, a border region of the Czech Republic, to Nazi Germany, Hlinka's successor, Jozef Tiso (1887-1947), proclaimed the establishment of an autonomous Slovak government in Žilina on October 6. The Vienna Award of November 2 ceded the southern border region of Slovakia (about 60% of the population was Hungarian) to Hungary. ...
