Kazutoshi Ueda

A Japanese linguist. He established the foundations of modern Japanese linguistics. After graduating from the Department of Japanese Literature at the Imperial University, he studied linguistics in Germany and France. After returning to Japan, he introduced Western European language research methods to the work of Japanese linguists up to that point. He reexamined existing research and pioneered new research in Japanese linguistics history, Japanese phonology, Japanese language history, and systematics. He also worked hard to establish the National Language Research Committee (1900, reorganized as the National Language Council in 1949), and was involved in national language policy and Japanese language research, while working to train many excellent young scholars. He served as a professor at the University of Tokyo, director of the Ministry of Education's Specialized Educational Affairs Bureau, president of the Jingu Kogakuin Academy, and president of Kokugakuin University. His books include "For the National Language" in two volumes (1895, 1903), "Ten Lectures on Japanese Linguistics" (1916), and "The Great Japanese Language Dictionary" (1915-1919), co-authored with Matsui Kanji. Her daughter is the writer Enchi Fumiko.

国語学者。現代の国語学の基礎を確立した人。帝国大学和文学科卒業後、ドイツ、フランスに留学し、言語学を修めた。帰国後、それまでの国学者の研究に対し、西ヨーロッパの言語研究方法を紹介。従来の研究を再検討し、新しく国語学史、国語音韻、国語史、系統論などの研究を開拓、他方、国語調査委員会の設置(1900年。1949年に国語審議会に改組)に尽力して、国語政策、国語調査にかかわるとともに、多くの優れた後進の育成に努めた。東大教授、文部省専門学務局長、神宮皇学館長、国学院大学長などを歴任。著書に『国語のため』全2巻(1895、1903)、『国語学の十講』(1916)や、松井簡治(まついかんじ)との共著『大日本国語辞典』(1915~1919)などがある。作家円地文子は娘。
