A Minoan ruin on the east coast of Crete. Located near a small bay, the town was established in the early Minoan period as a result of trade with the East, and flourished most during the late Minoan period. In the 20th century, the townscape was systematically excavated. The town was divided into blocks by several wide streets and numerous alleys, with houses lined up along the streets. It covers an area of approximately 50,000 m2. However, the ruins were severely destroyed during World War II. Many small votive clay figurines have been excavated from the top of Mount Petzofa, near the town. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
