An insect of the Lepidoptera family Tortricidae. It is feared as a major pest of fruit, especially apples. Its English name comes from the fact that it attacks unripe apples. The larvae feed on the flesh around the apple seeds and core, and when the apple ripens, they leave the apple to pupate. They may be found in nearby sugar or flour, where they may emerge. In North America, the larvae have been found infesting pears, wild hawthorns, walnuts, and other fruits. They have spread to almost all apple-growing areas around the world, but fortunately have not yet invaded Japan. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
