Among the venomous snakes belonging to the family Elapidae, order Lacertidae, this is a snake that can hold the front of its body upright and spread its ribs to expand its neck. It is generally large in size, usually lives on the ground, and is active and aggressive. It has a pair of venomous fangs with deep grooves at the front end of its upper jaw, and the venom flows through the grooves and enters the body of the victim it bites. The venom is a neurotoxin that has the effect of paralyzing the respiratory center. Many species can spit venom at their enemies, and this ability is particularly notable in the spitting cobra Hemachatus haemachatus and the black-necked cobra Naja nigricollis . They are found in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Africa. One of the most famous species is the Indian cobra, and its local type can also be found in Taiwan.

トカゲ目コブラ科 Elapidaeに属する毒ヘビのうち，体の前部を直立させ，肋骨を開いて頸部を広げることができるものをいう。体は一般に大型で，普通地上にすみ，行動的で性質が荒い。上顎の前端に，深い溝のある1対の毒牙をもち，毒液はその溝を流れてかみついた相手の体に入る。毒は神経毒で，呼吸中枢を麻痺させる作用をもつ。毒液を敵に吐きかけることができる種が多く，特にドクハキコブラHemachatus haemachatusやクロクビコブラ Naja nigricollisではこの能力が著しい。アジアとアフリカの熱帯・亜熱帯地方に分布する。最も有名な種の一つがインドコブラで，その地方型は台湾にもいる。
