Wichita - Uichita (English spelling)

A commercial and industrial city in the south-central part of the state of Kansas, USA. With a population of 344,284 (2000), it is the largest city in the state. It faces the Arkansas River and is a key hub for rail and road transport. It is home to aircraft manufacturing, the city's main industry, as well as oil refining, flour milling, meat processing, agricultural machinery and other industries. It is also known as an important market and shipping base for the surrounding grain and livestock areas. The town was founded on Wichita Indian settlement, and livestock farming developed after the railroad opened in 1872. Since then, the city's population has grown rapidly due to the fertile soil, discovery of oil, and rapid development of commerce and industry. There are many cultural facilities such as museums, art galleries, and theaters, as well as educational facilities such as Wichita State University and Friends University.

アメリカ合衆国、カンザス州中南部の商工業都市。人口34万4284（2000）で、同州最大の都市。アーカンザス川に面する。鉄道・道路交通の要衝。同市の産業の主軸をなす航空機製造をはじめ、精油、製粉、食肉加工、農業機械などの工業が立地する。周辺の穀物・牧畜地帯の重要な市場、出荷基地としても知られる。ウィチタ・インディアンの居住地に町が創設され、1872年の鉄道の開通以来、牧畜が発達した。その後、肥沃(ひよく)な土地、石油の発見、商工業の急速な発展により、都市人口が急増してきた。博物館、美術館、劇場などの文化施設、またウィチタ州立大学、フレンズ大学などの教育施設が数多くある。
