〘Noun〙 One of the constants of a conic section. When determining the locus of points where the ratio of the distance from a fixed point to a fixed line is constant, this ratio is called the eccentricity of the locus. If the eccentricity is less than one, the locus is an ellipse, if it is equal to one, it is a parabola, and if it is greater than one, it is a hyperbola.
