Mr. Kondo

Japanese: 近藤氏 - こんどううじ

It is said that the family began when Shugyo, a descendant of Fujiwara Hidesato of the Uona branch of the Northern Fujiwara clan, became an Omi no Jō and lived in Omi, calling himself Kondō Taira. Kondō Shichi Kunihira, who joined Minamoto no Yoritomo's uprising in 1180 (Jishō 4) but was defeated at Ishibashiyama and fled to Awa with Yoritomo and the others, was also from this family. Kunihira earned Yoritomo's trust due to his upright character, and in 1185 (Bun'ei 1) he entered Kyoto in place of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who had travelled west in pursuit of the Taira clan, and after the downfall of the Taira clan he went down to Chinzei and, together with Nakahara Hisatsune, carried out duties such as maintaining public order and stopping samurai from committing illegal acts.

藤原北家魚名流の藤原秀郷の系譜をひく脩行が近江掾となって近江に住し，近藤太を称したのに始まるという。1180年(治承4)源頼朝の挙兵に加わり石橋山で敗れて，頼朝らとともに安房にのがれた近藤七国平もこの一族の出身である。国平はその廉直な人格によって頼朝の信任をうけ，85年(文治1)平家を追って西下した源義経にかわって京都に入り，平家滅亡後は鎮西に下って，中原久経とともに治安維持，武士の非法停止等の任務を遂行した。
