〘 noun 〙① The hair that grows in an arch shape on the upper part of the eyelid, at the upper edge of the eye socket. Mayo. Eyebrows. 〘名〙① まぶたの上部、眼窩の上縁部にあたる所に弓状にはえている毛。まよ。まゆげ。〔十巻本和名抄(934頃)〕※源氏(1001‐14頃)若紫「つらつきいとらうたげにて、まゆのわたりうちけぶり」② まゆずみ。※承安二年広田社歌合(1172)「むこの海をなぎたる朝に見渡せばまゆも乱れぬ阿波の島山〈藤原実定〉」③ (眉は感情が端的に表われるところなので) 喜怒哀楽の情。→眉を開く・眉を読む。※浄瑠璃・菅原親王(1661)三「げんじの者共がゑいぐゎのまゆを打やぶらん」④ 何かの上に、眉のように張り出したものをいう語。(イ) 烏帽子の部分の名。前の中、とがっているひだの下に高く押し出している所。(ロ) 牛車の部分の名。屋形の前後の軒。※大鏡(12C前)六「一の車の口のまゆに香嚢かけられて」⑤ 眉のような三日月形をしたものをいう語。虹梁(こうりょう)または破風板などの下方の繰形(くりがた)。欠眉(かきまゆ)、抉眉(くじりまゆ)、出入眉、薙眉(なぎまゆ)、蛭眉(ひるまゆ)などがある。※玉塵抄(1563)一四「と云へども戸の上のまゆ柱など式の家のやうにないぞ」⑥ 伊勢船造りの箱型船首の装飾で、船首両側上棚の下部に細長く眉状に黒く塗るもの。※川船荷方伊勢船秘書(1708)伊勢船之覚書「まゆの仕様は〈略〉まゆふちの上よりあをりの下までぬる也」
