Indigenous people of Uto-Aztec descent who live in the central-western Mexican states of Nayaris and Jalisco. They have a population of about 20,000, of whom 65% also speak Spanish. They form numerous household clusters called rancherias in the dry mountainous areas, and use slash-and-burn agriculture to cultivate corn, pumpkins, tobacco, and other crops, as well as produce milk and cheese. Hunting and gathering also play a secondary role. There is a strong fusion of indigenous religions from before the Spanish conquest with Christianity, and Catholic saints are identified with over 100 indigenous gods who are responsible for rain, health, material prosperity, and other things.
