Futaobikoyaga (English spelling) Green rice caterpillar

Futaobikoyaga (English spelling) Green rice caterpillar

A moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae of the class Insecta. It is a small species with a wing span of 15-20 mm. The wings are long and slender, with the tips of the forewings pointed. The first generation of adults have dark gray-yellow forewings without a reddish-brown band running down the middle, but the second generation has bright yellow forewings, with a reddish-brown band in the middle in males and often partially or completely missing in females. This species is widely distributed throughout Japan and Southeast Asia, and its larvae are well known as rice pests. It is thought that its distribution area expanded with the advent of rice cultivation. The larvae are green caterpillars with degenerated abdominal legs on the third and fourth segments, so they walk like looperworms. They feed on rice leaves, and emerge 2-3 times a year in cold regions and 3-5 times a year in warm regions. Mature larvae overwinter in straw.
