Located in the central Philippines, at the eastern end of the Visayan Islands, it is the third largest island in the country. Its southwestern tip is connected to Leyte Island by a bridge across a narrow strait. Most of the island is mountainous. It is in the path of typhoons and suffers great damage every year. In addition to rice, corn, sweet potatoes, and coconuts, it also produces limestone and phosphate rock. The interior is undeveloped. The capital is Catbalogan.
