The name of the country of Vietnam used from 1054 to 1778. It was established by Ly Thai Tong (Li Taizong) of the Ly dynasty, and was used throughout the Tran, Le, and Quang Nam dynasties, but is often referred to as Annam abroad. Gia Long also used this name for a time (1780-1802). During the Nguyen dynasty, the name was changed to Vietnam or Dai Nam, but the nationalist party founded by Truong Tu Anh in 1939 used the old name and called itself the Dai Viet Party.
