Juan Bautista Justo

Argentine politician and socialist. Born in Buenos Aires. After graduating from the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine, he became a doctor, but his strong interest in labor and poverty issues led him to become a socialist. He founded the Argentine Socialist Party in 1896, and in 1898 completed the first Spanish translation of Marx's Das Kapital. In opposition to anarchism, which was strong in Argentina from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, he advocated revisionism based on parliamentarianism, and had a major influence on the course of the Argentine Socialist Party until his death. His wife, Alicia Morro de Justo, was also a socialist and a pioneer in the women's movement.

アルゼンチンの政治家、社会主義者。ブエノス・アイレスに生まれる。ブエノス・アイレス大学医学部を卒業後医者となったが、労働問題や貧困問題に強い関心を寄せ、社会主義者となった。1896年にアルゼンチン社会党を創設し、98年にはマルクスの『資本論』の最初のスペイン語訳を完成させた。19世紀末から20世紀初めにアルゼンチンで強かったアナキズムに対抗して、議会主義に立脚した修正主義を唱道し、没するまでアルゼンチン社会党の路線に大きな影響を与えた。夫人のアリシア・モロー・デ・フストも社会主義者で、女性運動の先駆者であった。
