After the execution of the Bohemian religious reformer Hus (1415), his followers (Hussites) started a rebellion in 1419 in protest against the oppression of the Roman Church and Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund. The Czech national movement against Catholic German rule also played a role. The crusades organized by the emperor at the command of the Pope were repeatedly defeated by the Hussite army. The Hussites were divided into the radical Taborites and the moderate Utraquists, who were centered around the city nobles, but the Council of Basel in 1433 moved to compromise with the moderates, causing the Hussites to split, and in 1436 the claims of the moderates were approved, bringing the rebellion to an end. → Related article Austria Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
