A former town in Higashikamo District, northeastern Aichi Prefecture. Located upstream of the Yahagi River, most of the area is mountainous, on the Mino-Mikawa Plateau. The main settlement is at a strategic location where the Iida Highway (National Route 153) and the Ena Highway (National Route 257) intersect, and it flourished as a post station. In addition to lumber and woodworking, the town produces rice and persimmons. In October 2003, it was transferred from Kitashitara District to Higashikamo District. In April 2005, it was incorporated into Toyota City along with Fujioka Town and Obara Village in Nishikamo District, and Asuke Town, Asahi Town, and Shimoyama Village in Higashikamo District. 98.63 km2 . 3,186 people (2003). 愛知県北東部,東加茂(ひがしかも)郡の旧町。矢作(やはぎ)川上流,大部分が美濃三河高原の山地。主集落は飯田街道(国道153号線)と恵那街道(国道257号線)が交わる要地で,宿駅として栄えた。製材・木工業を行うほか,米,花卉(かき)を産する。2003年10月北設楽郡から東加茂郡に変更。2005年4月西加茂郡藤岡町,小原村,東加茂郡足助町,旭町,下山村と豊田市へ編入。98.63km2。3186人(2003)。
