In Europe, embroidery that originated in the ancient Orient developed into two separate streams, and the technique was perfected again around 600. It was passed on from the Romans to the Byzantine Empire and the Christian Church, where it flourished as church embroidery, and was used to decorate hangings in churches, religious vestments, and royal court uniforms, with gold and silver threads used as symbols of authority. Ordinary noblewomen also began to learn the technique as part of their education, and eventually embroiderer guilds were formed and the practice flourished, and embroidery in the religious world spread to the general public as well.
