A city in northern Bulgaria, on the banks of the upper reaches of the Yantra River. Capital of the prefecture of the same name. Population 100,000 (1990). Called Tǎrnovo until 1965. Located 240 km east of Sofia, it was the capital of Bulgaria until the capital was moved to Sofia. The city is an agriculturally-based region with fertile soil of 41% black soil, and the food industry (about 60% of the city's industrial production) is thriving, including meat processing, sugar refining, canning, honey, butter, milk processing, and wine production. Industrial production began in 1861 when a textile factory was built by an Italian, and now there are various industries such as machine manufacturing (for example, agricultural machinery and construction machinery), metal processing, wood processing, papermaking, chemical and synthetic rubber, and textiles. ブルガリア北部,ヤントラYantra川上流の河岸にある都市。同名県の県都。人口10万(1990)。1965年までタルノボTǎrnovoと呼ばれた。ソフィアの東方240kmに位置し,ソフィアに遷都されるまでのブルガリアの首都であった。黒土41%という肥沃な地帯の農業中心で,食肉加工,製糖,缶詰,蜂蜜,バター,牛乳加工,ブドウ酒製造などの食品工業(市の工業生産の約60%)が盛んである。工業生産は1861年イタリア人によって織物工場が建てられたのに始まるが,今では農業機械,建設機械などの機械製作,金属加工,木材加工,製紙,化学および合成ゴム,繊維などの諸工業がある。
