Fujiwara no Nagate - Fujiwara no Nagate

A politician of the Nara period. He was the second son of Fusasaki, the founder of the Northern House of Japan. His mother was Princess Muro. In 737 (Tenpyo 9), he was promoted to the rank of Junior Fifth Rank. When the Crown Prince, Prince Funato, was deposed in 757 (Tenpyo Hoji 1), he recommended the Minister of the Right, Fujiwara Toyonari, and Prince Funato's brother, Prince Shioyaki, but this did not come to fruition. However, he was promoted to Middle Counselor in the same year, and played an active role in dealing with the Tachibana Naramaro Incident that occurred soon after, but in 764, during the Fujiwara Nakamaro Rebellion, he was credited with defeating Nakamaro, and was highly esteemed by Emperor Shotoku and promoted to the Minister of the Left. After the death of Emperor Shotoku, he conspired with Fujiwara no Yoshitsugu and Momokawa to support Emperor Konin, and was posthumously awarded the title of Daijo Daijin. The second volume of the Nihon Ryoiki records that he caused the flags of Hokkeji Temple to be toppled, and that he received bad news for making the octagonal tower of Saidaiji Temple square and changing its seven stories to five.
