A 20th century American comic book superhero. He first appeared in Action Comics in June 1938, and a newspaper serialization began in January 1939. The original story was written by Jerry Siegel and the illustrations by Joseph Shuster. Superman, the "Man of Steel," later became the protagonist of radio shows, animations, novels, Broadway musicals, television series, movies, and more. Superman was sent to Earth from the planet Krypton by his parents as a baby. He was discovered by the Kent couple in central America, and was raised under the name Clark. As a boy, he realized his hidden abilities, which later developed into the trademarks of his alter-ego, Superman, including the ability to fly, X-ray vision, and superhuman strength. Although Superman is invulnerable to any danger, Clark Kent is a gentle-natured man who usually works as a reporter for the newspaper Daily Planet. He is in love with his co-worker, Louis Lane, but Louis is so fascinated by Superman's bravery in fighting evil that he is unaware of his true identity. This dual identity is a major element of the tension in the story.
