This refers to a sudden deterioration in the growth condition of rice plants around the time the ears appear, resulting in a decrease in yield. In some regions, it is also called "ura-koke." This is a type of nutritional disorder during the later stages of growth (mainly the reproductive growth period) that is secondarily related to diseases (such as southern leaf spot and rice blast). It is said that the damage caused by this accounts for 20% of rice production. Also, autumn drop often occurs in aged rice paddies, very wet rice paddies, peat bogs, and rice paddies with an excess of organic matter. Generally, causes such as a lack of trace elements in the soil and poor clay quality are thought to be the causes.

イネが穂の出る頃から急に生育状態が悪くなって，実入りが少なくなることをいう。地方によっては「うらこけ」ともいう。生育後期 (おもに生殖生長期) の一種の栄養障害に病害 (ごま葉枯病，いもち病など) などが二次的に関係したものである。その被害は水稲作の2割に及ぶといわれる。また，老朽化水田，強湿田，泥炭地や有機物過多田などに秋落ち現象を起こすことが多い。一般に土壌の微量要素の欠乏や，粘土質の不良などの原因が考えられる。
