Sulfur dioxide gas - sulfur gas

Japanese:
Sulfur dioxide gas - sulfur gas
Its chemical formula is SO 2 . Its specific gravity is 2.264 (air = 1), its melting point is -75.5°C, and its boiling point is -10.0°C. Sulfur dioxide. It is a colorless, toxic gas with a pungent odor. It dissolves in water to produce sulfurous acid. It has reducing properties and exhibits a bleaching effect when it is wet. It is used as a reducing agent and industrially as a raw material for the manufacture of sulfuric acid, for textile bleaching, and in the paper and pulp manufacturing process. It is naturally found in volcanic gases and mineral springs, and reacts with hydrogen sulfide to produce sulfur. In industry, it is produced by burning sulfide ores such as pyrite and chalcopyrite or sulfur. The gas irritates mucous membranes, and if it is concentrated, it can burn the throat and chest, causing breathing difficulties. It is found in the exhaust gases of oil- and coal-fired thermal power plants and factories, and has become a pollution problem. In Japan, flue gas desulfurization technology has been established, and sulfurous acid gas is removed and collected in accordance with the environmental standards set by the Basic Law for Pollution Control.
