A city in northern Okayama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1929. The city is located in the center of the Tsuyama Basin, upstream of the Yoshii River. In 1603, Mori Tadamasa built Kakuzan Castle, and it later developed as a castle town. It is the intersection of the Kishin Line, Tsuyama Line, and Inbi Line. After the Chugoku Expressway was completed in 1983, industrial complexes were established and it was directly connected to the Hanshin economic zone. It is the center of the Mimasaka region. It was once known for Tsuyama sickles and Unsai weaving. In recent years, lumber and paper manufacturing have been active, mainly in the electrical and mechanical industries, and the city produces woodwork and paper products. There is the ruins of Innosho Mansion (historic site), Shurakuen, and Kakuzan Park. The mountainous area around the border with Tottori Prefecture in the northeast belongs to Hyonosen Ushiroyama Nagisan Quasi-National Park. In February 2005, Katsuta-gun's Katsuhoku-cho, Kume-gun's Kume-cho, Tomata-gun's Kamo-cho, and Awa-mura were incorporated. Area: 506.33 km2 . Population: 106,788 (2010). 岡山県北部の市。1929年市制。市街は吉井川上流,津山盆地の中央にあり,1603年森忠政が鶴山(かくざん)城を築き,のち城下町として発展。姫新(きしん)線,津山線,因美線の交点。1983年の中国自動車道全通後工業団地などが立地して,阪神経済圏と直結した。美作(みまさか)地方の中心をなす。かつて津山鎌,雲斎織の産で知られた。近年は電気・機械工業を中心に製材,製紙が活発,木工品,紙製品を産する。院庄(いんのしょう)館跡(史跡),衆楽園,鶴山公園がある。北東部の鳥取県境周辺の山地は氷ノ山後山那岐山(ひょうのせんうしろやまなぎさん)国定公園に属する。2005年2月勝田郡勝北町,久米郡久米町,苫田郡加茂町,阿波村を編入。506.33km2。10万6788人(2010)。
