Ryu Kanjun

A girl who sacrificed herself for the liberation of Korea. She was a student at Ewha School. At the age of 15, she was one of the student leaders who participated in the March 1st Independence Movement in Seoul. After the school closed, she returned to her hometown of South Chungcheong Province and planned to continue the movement in various places, including Cheonan, Yeongi, Cheongju, and Jincheon. She led the Heisen Market Uprising and was arrested and imprisoned. She did not succumb to the torture of the Japanese authorities, and continued to denounce the injustice of her trial, teaching the people the legitimacy of national independence and the dignity of patriotism. She died of illness as a result of the torture. She is also known as the "Joan of Arc of Korea."

朝鮮の民族解放に殉じた少女。梨花学堂学生であった。15歳のときソウルの三・一独立運動に参加した学生リーダーの一人。学校閉鎖後、故郷の忠清南道に帰り、天安、燕岐(えんき)、清州、鎮川(ちんせん)など各地で運動の継起を企図した。並川市場蜂起(へいせんいちばほうき)を指揮して逮捕、投獄された。日本当局の拷問に屈せず、裁判の不当を糾弾し続け、民衆に民族独立の正当性、祖国愛の尊厳を教えた。拷問により病死。「朝鮮のジャンヌ・ダルク」ともいわれている。
