Enugu is the capital of Enugu State in eastern Nigeria, West Africa. It has a population of 308,200 (1995). In 1909, coal mines were discovered in Udi, a suburb of the town, and in 1916, a railway line was opened from the port city of Port Harcourt, which led to the town's prosperity. There is a branch campus of the University of Nigeria in Enugu. It is the political center of eastern Nigeria, and is also a major industrial city, with furniture manufacturing factories, automobile assembly plants, chemical fiber factories, steel mills, and more.
