〘Noun〙 (psilophyton) A primitive fern discovered as a fossil in strata from the end of the Silurian period to the Devonian period of the Paleozoic era. It grows to about 20 centimeters in height. It has no leaves or roots, and produces scale-like protrusions on its stem. The sporangia are ellipsoid and are attached to the tip of the stem.
