1697‐1763 British obstetrician. He studied medicine at the University of Glasgow and opened a practice in his hometown before moving to London in 1739 to continue practicing obstetrics. He was involved in many births, trained many doctors, and contributed to the advancement of obstetrics through improvements to birth forceps. In his book Theory and Practice of Obstetrics (1752), he explained the mechanism of birth, obstetric practice, and how to use forceps. His Anatomical Atlases and Practice of Obstetrics (1754) was well received and has been translated into several languages, and some of the diagrams are also featured in Japan in Katakura Genshu's Obstetrics Discourse.
