A city located in southern Yamanashi Prefecture, occupying the northern slope of Mt. Fuji. It was incorporated as a city in 1951. The city center is along the old Kamakura Kaido road, and developed as the gate town of Sengen Shrine and the starting point of the Yoshidaguchi trail to Mt. Fuji. The textile industry, centered on Kai silk, was once thriving, but it declined. In 1968, the Chuo Expressway was opened from Otsuki City, improving access to highways, and precision machinery and electrical machinery industries have flourished. The Fujikyu Railway runs through the city, and there is a colony of Renge Azalea and Fujizakura (a natural monument) and Fuji-Q Highland. Area: 121.74 km2 . Population: 50,619 (2010).
