South Pacific Forum. A summit of independent nations and autonomous governments in the South Pacific. Also known as the South Pacific Nations Conference. Founded in 1971 with the aim of maintaining the independence of island nations and promoting unity in opposition to the South Pacific Commission led by the former colonial powers. Although political discussions are often central to the forum, such as protesting the nuclear tests at Mururoa Atoll and Japan's plan to dump nuclear waste in the ocean, and issuing a statement of support for the independence of French New Caledonia, the forum's primary focus is on pursuing economic development within the region. Later, the Federated States of Micronesia and other North Pacific nations joined, and in November 2000, the forum was renamed the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF). There are currently 16 member nations (New Caledonia and Timor-Leste are observers). The secretariat is in Suva, Fiji.

South Pacific Forum。南太平洋の独立国家および自治政府の首脳会議。南太平洋諸国会議とも。旧宗主国主導の南太平洋委員会に対して，島嶼国の主体性を堅持し，結束を図ることを目的として1971年創設された。ムルロア環礁での核実験や日本の核廃棄物海洋投棄計画への抗議，仏領ニューカレドニアへの独立支援声明を出すなど，政治討議が中心課題となることが多いが，本来は域内の経済発展の追求に主眼をおく。その後，ミクロネシア連邦など北太平洋諸国も参加，2000年11月，太平洋諸島フォーラムPacific Islands Forum（略称PIF）と改称。現構成国は16（ほかにニューカレドニア，東ティモールがオブザーバー）。事務局はフィジーのスバ。
