Mochihito-o

The second son of Emperor Goshirakawa. His mother was Shigeko, daughter of Fujiwara Suenari. He lived in Takakura, Sanjo, and was called Takakuranomiya. He was intelligent and popular, but Kenshunmon'in Taira Shigeko (Emperor Goshirakawa's consort) was jealous of him, and he was not proclaimed prince, so he remained king. In April 1180 (Jisho 4), at the urging of Minamoto no Yorimasa, he decided to raise an army to defeat the Taira clan. He called himself Prince Saisho and issued an imperial decree declaring that he would take the throne after defeating the Taira clan, and summoned Minamoto no Yukiie to deliver it to all the Minamoto clan in the country. The incident was soon discovered, and the king fled to Onjo-ji Temple. The Imperial Court renamed the king Minamoto no Mochiteru and exiled him to Tosa. The Daishu of Onjoji Temple supported King Mochihito and resisted, but finally, on May 25th, he escaped under cover of darkness and headed for Nara. The next day, Yorimasa and all his subordinates were killed in battle at the Uji River. The king was killed by a stray arrow.

後白河(ごしらかわ)天皇の第二皇子。母は藤原季成(すえなり)の女(むすめ)成子。三条高倉(さんじょうたかくら)に住み高倉宮とよばれた。才学優れ、人望もあったが、建春門院(けんしゅんもんいん)平滋子(しげこ)（後白河天皇女御(にょうご)）に嫉視(しっし)され、親王宣下を得られず王にとどまった。1180年（治承4）4月源頼政(よりまさ)の勧めにより平氏討伐の挙兵を決意する。自らを最勝(さいしょう)親王と称し、平氏討伐後は皇位につくことを宣言した令旨(りょうじ)を、源行家(ゆきいえ)を召して全国の源氏に伝えさせた。まもなく事が発覚し、王は園城(おんじょう)寺に逃れた。朝廷では王を源以光(もちてる)と改名させ土佐に流すこととした。園城寺大衆(だいしゅ)は以仁王を奉じて抵抗したが、ついに5月25日、夜陰に脱出し奈良に向かった。翌日宇治川(うじがわ)での戦いで頼政以下ことごとく討ち死にした。このとき王は流れ矢に当たって死んだという。
