Roosevelt
American politician. Also known as Roosevelt. 32nd President (1933-1945). Democrat. Distant relative of T. Roosevelt. Married his cousin Elinor (1884-1962) in 1905. Entered politics in 1910, served as Senator and Under Secretary of the Navy. Retired due to polio (polio). Governor of New York in 1929. After 1933, became the first American president to serve four consecutive terms. Implemented the New Deal to overcome the crisis of the Great Depression. Moved toward friendly diplomacy with Latin American countries, and recognized the Soviet Union, overcoming isolationism and acting proactively abroad. During World War II, led the Allied powers together with Churchill and Stalin. Realized postwar plans for a United Nations organization, including cooperation with the Soviet Union, but died just before the end of the war. During this time, his wife Elinor supported her husband as a social worker, women's group leader, and critic, and was active in women's liberation and a well-known human rights advocate.

Roosevelt

American politician. Also known as Roosevelt. The 26th president (1901-1909). He served as a member of the House of Representatives and Secretary of the Navy, and became a national hero after commanding volunteer troops in the Spanish-American War. He was promoted to vice president in 1900 and the following year after President McKinley was assassinated. He strengthened the power of the federal government through reformist policies such as regulating monopolies and protecting resources. He strengthened control over the Caribbean region by making Cuba a protectorate and acquiring the Panama Canal Zone, and implemented imperialist policies such as increasing naval power, intervening in the Moroccan incident, and advancing into the Far East. In 1905, he mediated the Russo-Japanese War. In 1912, he organized the Progressive Party and sought a third term as president, but was defeated by Wilson. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906.

ローズベルト

米国の政治家。ルーズベルトとも。第26代大統領(1901年―1909年)。下院議員,海軍長官等を歴任,米西戦争に義勇軍を指揮して国民的英雄となった。1900年副大統領,翌年大統領マッキンリーの暗殺で昇格。独占企業の規制や資源保護等の革新政策で連邦政府の権限を強化。キューバ保護国化やパナマ運河地帯獲得などによってカリブ海地域に対する支配を強化,海軍力を増強し,モロッコ事件に介入,極東進出を図るなど帝国主義的政策を展開した。1905年日露戦争の調停に当たる。1912年革新党を組織して大統領3選をねらうがウィルソンに敗北。1906年ノーベル平和賞。
